The sudden emergence of a new popular movement and the dramatic fall of Serzh Sargsyan’s government give rise to a historic opportunity for democratic renewal in Armenia. The newly elected Prime Minister and opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan has vowed to carry out systemic political and economic reforms and has appointed a cabinet which includes highly regarded figures from the political opposition and civil society organizations.
However, many elements of the old system – including a parliament dominated by the previous ruling party, a constitution structured to benefit the ruling party, and an economy dominated by oligarchs —remain in place. With high public expectations for democratic change and a new government committed to reform, Armenian civil society has a unique opportunity to support the development of accountable institutions in the country.
In a panel discussion at the National Endowment for Democracy, Armenian civil society activists will examine the success of the recent civic movement in Armenia, opportunities for democratic reform, and challenges facing Armenia’s new leadership. The National Endowment for Democracy and Open Society Foundations invite you to a discussion of current developments in Armenia, featuring a conversation with:
