Coercive diplomacy is an important tool of Chinese foreign policy that the ruling Communist Party will continue to use against foreign governments and companies, particularly in democratic countries, notes a valuable new analysis from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. The CCP’s practice of coercive diplomacy is very broad in its targets, intentions, methods and levels of retaliation, according to The Chinese Communist Party’s coercive diplomacy, a report from ASPI analysts Fergus Hanson, Emilia Currey and Tracy Beattie.
The CCP, particularly under the leadership of Xi Jinping, has made it increasingly clear that the party ‘leads everything’ and is in strict control of the country through its ‘ideology’ and ‘structural system’. This differs from liberal democracies in that China’s core national interests are closely centred on the CCP’s own self-defined political security, the report adds. RTWT
