Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Alexievich seeks to represent the will of protesters in Belarus, despite intimidation by Alexander Lukashenka’s regime, The New Yorker’s writes.
“He is going there to trade sovereignty for personal security,” Alexievich said, referring to Lukashenka. Moscow, however, seems reluctant to intervene while Belarusians are protesting; on Wednesday, Vladimir Putin’s press secretary told journalists that talk of Lukashenka’s visit was premature.
