To celebrate International Democracy Day 2022, the Global Democracy Coalition, currently hosted by International IDEA, will hold an event to celebrate and discuss the most effective ways to support democracy’s defenders, showcasing stories and examples from partner organizations in the Global Democracy Coalition and their activist grantees/partners.
In Brussels, International IDEA, the European Endowment for Democracy (EED), European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP), and Carnegie Europe will mark International Democracy Day at the European Committee of the Regions in Brussels and online, with the support of the European Parliament and the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
In Washington, D.C. International IDEA and Coalition partners will hold a hybrid event to celebrate democracy advocates and defenders.
In the first panel, moderated by Kyra Buchko, Co-Executive Director at PartnersGlobal, activists will share their stories, strategies and provide recommendations to the democracy assistance organizations. Speakers include Tutu Alicante – Equatorial Guinea; H.E Mr. Moe Zaw Oo – Myanmar; Márta Pardavi – Hungary; Fahd Saif – Yemen.
A second panel, moderated by Annika Silva-Leander, Head of North America for International IDEA, will comprise democracy assistance organizations, who will share how they support democracy defenders and how their strategies and programming are shifting to address new challenges. The panel will feature Damon Wilson – President and CEO of the National Endowment for Democracy; Derek Mitchell – President of the National Democratic Institute; Gina Romero – Latin America and the Caribbean Network for Democracy (REDLAD); Anthony Smith – Westminster Foundation for Democracy.
Nicolas Bouchet, a visiting fellow at the German Marshall Fund in Berlin, will help frame this discussion by presenting the key findings of a report written together with Ken Godfrey at the European Partnership for Democracy and Richard Youngs at Carnegie Europe, on changing democracy support in hostile environments. 15 September 2022. 9:00-15:10 ET RSVP
