It will take a clear, consistent collaborative effort amongst the world’s democracy experts, activists, and leaders to push back against the global network of authoritarian leaders, says historian Anne Applebaum.
Democratic forces should follow the example set by autocratic rivals by working together to support each other through various means such as business deals, economic cooperation, or technological support, she told the recent 11th Global Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy.
Applebaum delivers the 19th annual Seymour Martin Lipset Lecture on Democracy in the World on Thursday, December 1, 2022 on the theme of “Autocracy Inc.: How the World’s Authoritarians Work Together.”
The Seymour Martin Lipset Lecture on Democracy in the World was inaugurated in 2004 by the International Forum for Democratic Studies at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the Munk School for Global Affairs at the University of Toronto as an important new forum for discourse on democracy and its progress worldwide.
