Human rights defenders put their lives on the line everyday to defend and advance the ability of all people to access their fundamental human rights, and this critically important role was formally recognized with the adoption of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders on December 9, 1998.
Please join a High-Level Commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders (HRDs). The event will celebrate the achievements of human rights defenders over the last 25 years by featuring courageous human rights defenders and high-level speakers from the U.S. State Department, USAID, the U.S. Congress, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders, Mary Lawlor, and the diplomatic community. The event will also emphasize the role governments and multilateral institutions play in supporting and elevating the work of HRDs.
